Berry Time!

July 13, 2009

One of my favorite summer pastimes is going to the u-pick fruit farms in the Sacramento area.  There are plenty to choose from, but our annual tradition has always been a trip to Amber Oaks Farms in Auburn.  Offering over 100 different varieties of berries alone, this farm offers u-pick fruit several days a week.  Their schedule is always changing so it’s best to call ahead and let them know you are coming.  They have wagons for little ones to ride in and little berry picking boxes with strings perfect for small children to hang around their neck for easy picking.  The best part about Amber Oaks is that in August their thornless blackberries come into season.  No more worries about prickles and pokes, the littlest children can run through the rows of fruit, pick and eat berries to their heart’s delight.  And finally, the best thing about Amber Oaks is that you only pay for the berries you pick and weigh – any that happen to be eaten in the process are free of charge!  Mark this one on your calendars moms, bring a picnic lunch, sunscreen and lots of water and really live summer as it was meant to be with your little ones.

Ok, call me a dork but I'm a hippy at heart and the idea of picking my own fresh berries with my boys and going home to make a cobbler is nothing short of utter delight to me. I just overlook the fact that my boys will tell you they don't actually like blackberries and that the weather will be  Read more...
