At one with nature

January 19, 2009

I went back to my roots this weekend and took my kids on a day trip to Tilden Park in Berkeley. Both my parents grew up a couple of miles from this amazing park, and my grandparents took me there all the time when I was a kid. Just as I remembered, it was simply wonderful. There is a 'little farm' that has cows, chickens, ducks, sheep, goats and more that kids can feed and learn about.  Read more...

Fishy Fun

January 15, 2009

My mother would be sad to know that one of my fondest childhood memories does not include any of my family members. Sorry mom, but when I was a kid we had these neighbors, a kind of eccentric but nice young couple named Nancy and Ray. Well one summer when I was about 8, Nancy's niece Tara came out from New Jersey for a two-week vacation. Tara was a 9 year-old gum-poppin', hair-teasin',  Read more...

One fish, two fish...

January 06, 2009

We are a home full of pets. We have dogs, cats, fish, frogs... in the past we've had rabbits, ducks, chickens - you name it. But most recently we have expanded our fish collection. We have two modest fresh water tanks and while the lovely little swimmers are a pleasure unto themselves, what I've also discovered is that they are a great teaching device for my preschooler. Here are a few ways  Read more...

Picking a pup for your preschooler

September 18, 2008

We are in pet-mode here at Sac Savvy Source. Shopping for a new kitten and trying to leash-train our 9 month-old puppy we are a little crazy but having fun. Our good friend Johnita Wemken, owner and publisher of the fabulous Sac publication Pet Gazette, is here once again today to give us some much needed advice on choosing the right pooch for your family. I guess it's too late for us, but  Read more...

Icky, slimy, scaley stuff

September 11, 2008

Creepy, crawly, slimy, biting snakes, lizards, reptiles! What is the allure to our little ones? Just the other day I was remembering playing with snails and crickets as a little girl. I can recall fearlessly plucking bullfrogs from streams and scooping up tadpoles into soda bottles to eagerly deliver to my mother. She never reacted with the delight I expected, and I guess that's just it.  Read more...

Circus Nostalgia

August 27, 2008

When I think of the circus I remember being at Oakland Coliseum as a little girl, holding one of those swirling red and blue lights and picking cotton candy out of my hair while watching the beautiful ladies ride horseback standing straight up. I think of my father, who worked his fingers to the bone but seemed to have a bottomless wallet for one night each year. I would emerge from the magic  Read more...

Furry Feathered Fair Fun

August 20, 2008

My oldest son's first word was 'kitty', which is no surprise since we had five of them at the time. Blame it on nature or nurture, but like their old mom, my boys are avid animal enthusiasts. So in addition to keeping the usual houseful of dogs, cats, rabbits and fish, we also make regular (non-shopping) trips to the pet store so we can all get our furry fix. After writing about the great  Read more...

Lions and Tigers and Grandmas - Oh My!

June 16, 2008

My kids love nothing more than a day out with grandma and grandpa. They are well aware that the day will involve ridiculous amounts of sugar, hundreds of dollars spent on toys their mother considers crappy and annoying, not to mention a good amount of time spent joggling their little brains via amusement ride, movies, television or some other form of hedonistic junk. Now don't get me wrong, as  Read more...
