One fish, two fish...

January 06, 2009

We are a home full of pets. We have dogs, cats, fish, frogs... in the past we've had rabbits, ducks, chickens - you name it. But most recently we have expanded our fish collection. We have two modest fresh water tanks and while the lovely little swimmers are a pleasure unto themselves, what I've also discovered is that they are a great teaching device for my preschooler. Here are a few ways  Read more...

Election Day with Kids in Tow

November 03, 2008

Tomorrow is it. That's right, possibly the most important election of our lifetime and here we are, right in the thick of it. Along with us are the little ones in our backseats, watching the protesters lining the usually quiet sidewalks, listening to the debates on the radio and television. How much do we enlighten our kiddos? When my 4 year-old asks what a 'proposition' is,  Read more...

5 ways to curb your family's spending

October 22, 2008

These days it seems everyone is working hard to save a buck. In our household we've cut way back on unnecessary spending and I look for deals wherever I can. There are some great ways for families to still maintain their quality of life while also saving money. 1. Shop smarter for food Groceries are a huge part of our family budget, but there are a lot of ways to  Read more...

Sick & Tired

September 29, 2008

There is only one thing to say about being a mom and getting sick: it sucks. I have first-hand knowledge of the suckage today because I have an awful cold and unlike normal people, cannot get into bed and nurse myself back to health. Even though I am feverish, snotty and miserable, I still got up and packed lunches, trucked kids to and from school and soccer practice and did dishes and  Read more...

Picking a pup for your preschooler

September 18, 2008

We are in pet-mode here at Sac Savvy Source. Shopping for a new kitten and trying to leash-train our 9 month-old puppy we are a little crazy but having fun. Our good friend Johnita Wemken, owner and publisher of the fabulous Sac publication Pet Gazette, is here once again today to give us some much needed advice on choosing the right pooch for your family. I guess it's too late for us, but  Read more...

Puppies and Preschoolers - advice from the pros

September 17, 2008

Since yesterday I morbidly decided to delve into death and house pets, I thought today I would invite local publisher Johnita Wemken, owner of the Pet Gazette (www.petgazette.org) publication, to talk about puppies and preschoolers. While dogs do help teach kids about responsibility and empathy, the relationship does have to develop and be nurtured. You can't throw any old puppy at any old  Read more...

Raising Responsible Kids

September 12, 2008

I'm just going to be up front and admit that I am not the most organized mother. I try really hard, I do. But the color-coordinated folders and the outfits laid out the week before never last very long in my house. When it comes to my kid's school I do, however, put forth extra effort so that all our paperwork is turned in, all volunteer hours are worked and we just generally have our p's  Read more...

More resources from a frazzled mom with 'bad' kids...

September 03, 2008

Since recently I've discussed the challenge of disciplining young kids today, I found a great resource I wanted to share with all you Sac moms. Mercy Hospital has a great program that offers a variety of parenting classes for parents of preschool and school-aged children. Here's a round-up of all they have to offer in the next couple of months. Please note: classes are intended for  Read more...

Back-to-Preschool!

September 02, 2008

While many grammar schools have been back in session for weeks, it is finally preschool time again. Tomorrow my 4 year-old Solomon and I have a back-to-school get together at our preschool. He has been groaning and whining for weeks, so he is absolutely thrilled to be going back to the world of big kids'. Since I've been through this whole preschool deal before, I thought I'd give some  Read more...

Rules, regulations and rowdy little ones

September 01, 2008

Having two boys under 7 years old is no small job. Then again having any young children is a challenge but having two who both happen to be aggressive, stubborn and independent can be particularly daunting. Now, I'm not going to say I don't know where they developed these characteristics because sometimes I feel like I'm talking (or arguing) with tiny boy-versions of myself. However, that  Read more...
