Pumpkin Patch kinda weekend...
October 16, 2009
If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend with the kiddos, it's the perfect time to hit a local pumpkin patch and have some fun. You'll miss the crazy rush that happens later in the month and it's a great way to kick off this holiday season, which is usually a favorite with the little ones. I found a great list of local pumpkin patches which include hay rides, train rides, corn mazes, haunted houses, jump houses and more. So check out one of these. I highly recommend the Pumpkin Farm in Citrus Heights and Fog Willow Pumpkin Farm in Wilton. My boys and I have gone to the Pumpkin Farm every year since they were toddlers and Fog Willow for many field trips. They are both really wonderful, so check one out and enjoy this amazing season!

Fog Willow Pumpkin Farm is the brainchild of Elk Grove school teacher Stacey Cates. With her family history rooted in farming, Cates felt that students weren’t learning much about agriculture and wanted to do something about it. Hence, Fog Willow was born in 2003. The farm is tucked along the banks of the Consumnes River and is immensely popular with school-aged kids as evidenced by the many school busses making their way to the farm. This is a great location to bring your family as there are lots to do, with a barrel train, hay rides, petting zoo, crafts, picnic area, haystack and barbecue during the weekends. Kids can join the Lil’ Pickers Punkin’ Club ($20) to receive goodies.

Halloween is a-comin!
September 08, 2009
So I hate to be the one to break the bad news, but the holiday season is indeed upon us. It’s only early September but next month brings with it the excitement of Halloween and we all know that after that it is a landslide of holidays. So every time this year I try to really prepare. Decide which events I’ll take the kids to and what traditions we will squeeze into our schedule. I begin with ordering or making (depending on what they want) Halloween costumes and for the past five years I always make time for the Fairytale Town Halloween festival. It changes every year and this year it has a sixties psychedelic theme. But the best part about this event is that it falls a week before the actual holiday. So when our little ones are counting the days and just itching to put on some costumes and collect some candy, they have a little pre-season fun to tide them over until the 31st. Here are the details, be sure to put it on your calendar because this is a really fun one.Roll up for a Safe & Super Halloween! Tickets are now on sale for the 23rd annual SAFE & SUPER HALLOWEEN celebration at Fairytale Town. This year's theme is the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. Journey back in time to the psychedelic sixties for three consecutive nights of family friendly Trick-or-Treating dedicated to the music and memories of those fabulous four Liverpool lads. You'll visit 17 candy stations scattered along the long and winding road throughout the park. Check out the Octopus' Garden, take a trip down Penny Lane, cross Abbey Road and stop off at Strawberry Fields before you get back to where you once belonged. You can make your very own Walrus Puppet and Spin Art, enter a far out costume parade, have your picture taken on stage with Sgt. Pepper and the Yellow Submarine, get a ticket from Lovely Rita the Meter Maid, and experience plenty of surreal surprises for young and old alike as you sing along--all together now--with all the songs you know and love. The MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR at Fairytale Town is a special ticketed event: Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 23, 24, 25, 2009, from 5PM - 9PM. Presale tickets are $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Day-of the event tickets are $9 for members and $12 for nonmembers. For more information please go to our website: www.fairytaletown.org. Puppet Art Theater will also be performing puppet shows in our Children's Theater during the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR event. Puppet show tickets are $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers (children 2 and under will be admitted to the puppet show free), in addition to event admission. Puppet showtimes are 6 PM, 7 PM & 8 PM.

So this is going to make a lot of moms cringe – but you have to admit there are few things our little creatures adore more than creepy, slimy critters. A local billboard I saw today inspired me to go online and find out more about the annual reptile show that is coming to our neck of the woods this very month! I know, I know. The last thing mom wants to do is enter a room filled with snakes and lizards – but this show gets great reviews so take it into consideration because your little ones will LOVE it! Not to mention it’s a great opportunity to educate little ones on animals and wildlife. In addition to the general expo there are books, videos and live shows that exhibit many rare and wonderful creatures. School Shopping on a budget!
August 04, 2009
Well, back-to-school is upon us and with it, the inevitable chore of back to school shopping. My boys have outgrown nearly everything this past year: shirts, sweatshirts, rain clothes, snow clothes, shoes – you name it. If I were to cruise on down to the local mall I’m sure I could drop a grand in a heartbeat. However, Mama’s wallet isn’t so thick this year and I’m looking for local deals on quality clothes. I stopped by Old Navy at Sunrise Mall and picked up some really cute long-sleeve shirts for my boys with great graphics like guitars, drums and rainbow skulls. They were all originally $14.50 a piece and on sale today two for $15.
Later this week I’m going to hit Kohl’s in Folsom where they have really amazing sales going on. I shopped there last year for my kids and picked up pants for as little as $6 a pair – you can’t beat that! Finally, I’m setting aside some of my back to school budget for the upcoming Just Between Friends consignment sale at the Sacramento Convention Center August 28 – 30th. They literally fill a convention center room with lightly used, high quality clothing for babies, kids, teens and maternity. Admission is free, but there is about a two hour time commitment – one hour to shop and another to stand in line. However it is well worth it – the clothes are great – and really reasonably priced. And if you want to wait until Sunday everything price is 50% off! So good luck school shopping this year – remember you don’t have to spend a fortune to keep your kids looking snazzy all school-year long!

Kayaking and Pow Wows in beautiful Sacramento
May 14, 2009
Well temperatures are rising and rumor has it we are going to hit the triple digits in Sac this weekend! My boys are thrilled about the beautiful weather, we’ve spent plenty of time playing outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend I must recommend kayaking at Negro Bar in Folsom. We went last weekend and a company called Outdoor Adventures rents single and double kayaks hourly that you can paddle around the river in. It was Dad’s birthday so he had the luxury of a single kayak while I got a double that fit me and the two boys. They supply you with paddles and life jackets and the price is really reasonable at $10 an hour for a single and $20 an hour for a double. The kid’s looked for fish and snacked on chips and bottled water and it was a really wonderful way to spend the afternoon. If you are looking for a non-water activity this weekend check out Pow Wow Days in Orangevale. A community tradition for nearly fifty years, Pow Wow days offers carnival rides, vendors, live music, parade, fun food and lots of kids’ activities including games and puppet shows. Don’t miss their snow cones – the best ever! Directions to Negro Bar. From Sacramento on Highway 50, take the Folsom Rd exit at the city of Folsom. After the bridge over the river, turn left onto Greenback. The park is immediately on the left. From I80, take Greenback almost to Folsom and turn right into the park. Kayak rental are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends all summer long!Pow Wow Days runs May 14 – 17 for more info go to www.orangevalechamber.com and for a detailed schedule of events go to www.ovview.com/pow_wow_days Read more...
Mama's Day Fun
May 08, 2009
So it's that time again, time to honor all those hardworking, loving, amazing mothers. I know, you are used to prioritizing everything and everyone above yourself - but it's important to give yourself a pat on the back and also to teach the kids that mom is more than a cook and a maid - she's a real person who needs to be appreciated! So schedule a pedicure, have coffee with a friend and then hang out with your kids this weekend and remind them that their mom rocks! Crusing around on the internet I found a bunch of great family activities for Mother's Day on one of my favorite local events calendars - www.parentsmonthlyonline.com. Happy Mother's Day!
Farms, Friends and Fairytales at Fairytale Town - "This event is a fun way for children to learn how important agriculture is to our every day lives," says program manager Sharlene Lal. "It's one thing to hear about how ice cream or butter is made, or how wool is spun into yarn it's another thing to see it happen in front of your very eyes!" Families can also visit with a variety of people and organizations who bring agricultural products to market. While you wander the grounds learning all about agriculture, you can listen to live bluegrass music provided by Loose Acoustic Trio. 11 am – 3 pm. All ages. General $4.50; Children 2 & under Free. Fairytale Town, 3901 Land Park Dr., Sacramento. For more info call 916-808-8886 or visit www.FairytaleTown.org

Snow White Fun
January 30, 2009
As you probably already know, we are big fans of children's theater around here. One of the only local theaters that I have yet to visit is Stage Nine Theatre in Folsom. This is ironic since I live about five minutes away from this adorable venue! However, we are big fans of Old Town Folsom, where Stage Nine is located and have passed by this charming little theater many times. Currently the Read more...
No Bones About It!
January 28, 2009
While often it is just boys that like bones, I've found that most kids are interested in (or obsessed with) dinosaurs and dinosaur skeletons. Either way, teaching kids about bones is a great way to enter into conversations about health, how our bodies work and how healthy eating can make them bigger, faster and stronger (like mini super heroes!). A great exhibit is going on right now at Read more...

A Fairytale Town Education
January 16, 2009
It's no secret that I love Fairytale Town. I grew up with a similar venue, Fairyland, in Oakland and have wonderful memories of going there with my father when I was a little girl. However, Fairytale Town is head and shoulders above what I experienced as a child. They have amazing events that focus on really educating children and opening them up to new experiences. Play a little
January 14, 2009
I must admit that I never made the time to go to the theater until after I had kids. Once my toddler lost interest in simple toys, I began to search for ways to entertain him in a more sophisticated way, and I have to admit I was a bit lost. One day a mother at a park near our home suggested I take him to a performance at Chautauqua Playhouse in Carmichael. I nodded politely and secretly Read more...

Rubik's Fun
January 10, 2009
Last year, purely out of nostalgia, I bought a Rubik's cube. Like many of us I was a kid in the eighties and witnessed in full force the Rubik's cube craze that ensued. Of course, my boys had never seen one. My 6 year-old likes to play with it in the car and while he can't figure it out, he thinks I'm a genius because I can get one color solid on one-side (that means the other five sides are Read more...

We finally got our tree tonight! I know, many people are way ahead of us but we've been doing some redecorating and wanted to get everything settled before we picked the perfect tree. Tomorrow we will decorate and decide on Christmas cookies to bake this year. I have a pile of my grandmother's recipes and this will be my first year baking them with my boys. There are a few other holiday Read more...

This annual festivity includes a park transformed with holiday decorations, extanded hours and plenty of fun. Children & Charity
December 04, 2008
Let's face it, most of our kids are spoiled. Most of them have enough toys for ten kids to play with and all they want is more, more, more. I try to remind my children regularly throughout the year how fortunate they are and squash any bratty entitled behavior. Of course at this time of year it's especially important to remind little ones that charity is the greatest gift, and I just found Read more...
Gobble up and get ready for Black Friday!
November 28, 2008
The turkey's been carved, the pumpkin pies been devoured and tomorrow is black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. I am not planning on doing much shopping tomorrow. The one place I will hit is my nearest Longs Drugs store. I read through the piles of advertisements this afternoon and just one produce caught my eye. It's called the Pure Digital video recorder, and I received one Read more...
Big Screen Holiday Fun
November 20, 2008
I love holiday movies - I mean it, I LOVE them. I've seen Miracle on 34th Street about one million times and I'll rent it again this year. One of our family favorites is The Polar Express. Ok, the animation is a little weird and all, but it's a great story and a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit. I was delighted to discover that they have altered the film for the gigantic, amazing IMAX Read more...
Storytime Relief
November 18, 2008
While generally I suggest preschool storytimes for the educational value and kid-friendly entertainment, today I am giving you an updated round-up for purely selfish and superficial reasons. As of Thursday of this week, my children are out of preschool and 1 st grade for TEN DAYS! Translation: I am prisoner and slave to the little beasts for a lot longer than I???m guessing I can handle. Fall Plays!
November 07, 2008
As many of you may have already figured out, I am a big fan of theater for children. Going to plays with children inspires their imaginations, encourages their love of books, gives them new ideas for play and often inspires brand new little thespians. While many parents don't think taking their little ones to performances is a wise idea, I always encourage it. Our local theaters that offer Read more...
Autumn Activities
November 06, 2008
I have to admit I am relieved that both Halloween and the election are over. It's a mixed bag but we have some promising new leaders and today I officially dumped the leftover candy. I can only spend so many nights scrubbing Laffy Taffy out of my 4 year-olds molars. Anyway, I am looking forward to the cool November days ahead. I'm dreaming of sweet potatoes and being lulled to sleep by Read more...
Coming Soon to Theaters Near You!
November 05, 2008
Few things thrill me like a trip to the movies. It has been about five years since I've seen anything rated beyond PG - however hot popcorn and chocolate coupled with a dark theater and my kiddos next to me make the experience as exciting as any Oscar-winner. One of the things I love to do is look online and anticipate the new movies coming out. Call me a nerd, but I put them on my calendar Read more...
Nurturing little bookworms
November 04, 2008
with children helps them develop language skills, listening skills and interacting with others. Whether you read at home with your little ones or take them to local storytimes, you are helping them to develop a love of reading and books that will serve them for a lifetime. As a small child I was an avid reader of Nancy Drew books. Today, there are a thousand times as many wonderful Read more...
Election Day with Kids in Tow
November 03, 2008
Tomorrow is it. That's right, possibly the most important election of our lifetime and here we are, right in the thick of it. Along with us are the little ones in our backseats, watching the protesters lining the usually quiet sidewalks, listening to the debates on the radio and television. How much do we enlighten our kiddos? When my 4 year-old asks what a 'proposition' is, Read more...
Spooky Fun - one week early!
October 24, 2008
In my opinion, Halloween comes and goes too quickly. A month's worth of build-up and excitement which culminates in a single night is not enough to satisfy those of us with a passion for candy and dress-up clothes! So take the time this weekend to really celebrate this spooky month. There are a whole list of great activities for kids so they can put on their outfits and have a ball. Read more...
Pumpkin Patch A B C's and 1 2 3's...
October 23, 2008
Going to the pumpkin patch in October is a treat that I especially look forward to. Growing up in the Bay Area, we didn't have pumpkin patches, we just bought our pumpkins from the grocery store without the fun of hay rides, corn mazes and all the other fun stuff local patches have to offer. Visiting your local pumpkin patch can also be an educational experience for your little ones. Here Read more...
Frankenswine!
October 20, 2008
There are few things that take me back to my childhood like a puppet show does. When I was a kid we saw them at school, at the library and we performed endless puppet shows (mainly with homemade sock puppets!) at home. One of my very favorite local performance groups is called Puppet Art Theater ??? they take puppetry to a whole new level. On Wednesday they will perform Funny Read more...

Ive been pondering the idea of doing a list of 99 fun things to do in Sacramento with your kids. While I havent hit 99 yet, Ive worked my way to 33 and come up with some darn fun ideas, if I do say so myself. Memories Set in Stone
October 13, 2008
Not being a mother who put together the adorable baby books with locks of hair, footprints and endearing photos, I am always in search of alternative ways to record my kid's childhood. I've kept blogs, written stories and pieced together photo albums. And while I'm a tiny bit ashamed of the giant storage bin with everything that should have gone into their baby books, I'm also Read more...

If you have a kiddo who is obsessed with Halloween, or trains for that matter the Spookomotive is a cant miss this month. A Halloween-themed train decorated in spirit of the season and departing on-the-hour in Old Sacramento brought to you by the Central Pacific Railroad Freight Depot, the Spookomotive is a ball for kids of all ages. Toys that equal fun, not junk
October 08, 2008
Toys come and go. In my house they are delivered by the truckload at Christmas and on birthdays and removed by the station wagon-full nearly monthly and donated to the Goodwill. I have a real love-hate relationship with toys. While I love to give my children fun and enriching activities and entertainment, the crappy things litter my house and the clutter ultimately clogs up my overloaded Read more...
Hard Times for Kids too
October 07, 2008
It seems that most people these days are strapped financially. It can be difficult to help your preschooler adjust when he or she is used to new goodies and expensive outings on a regular basis. I know some people tred more lightly on these subjects but I tend to be frank with my kids, i.e. "No. Mom is broke." End of discussion. I wonder if I am permanently damaging them when they say Read more...

We are already three days into October and I have decided that a to-do list for the month is in order so that we are sure to schedule in all the fun Halloween activities we love in Sacramento . We are all so fortunate to live in this beautiful valley that affords us lovely warm fall weather to enjoy the outdoors. Here is my current list of must-do fun for the month of October. Home or Away - the pros and cons of party planning
September 26, 2008
Tonight we are going to attend a friend's birthday party at Pump It Up in Roseville . He is a darling little boy and my kids are absolutely thrilled because Pump It Up is in their top-ten favorite places to go crazy. I have been tempted many times to have their birthdays at a party venue like Pump It Up, but nostalgia always kicks in and I opt for the home birthday parties. Thinking about Read more...

September 19, 2008
Well it seems summer is officially coming to a close. The weather is blissfully cooler, school is back in full-swing and what better way to welcome in the fall than with a festival? There are a plethora of festivals this weekend just for families and little ones, so here's a round-up of what, where and when Folsom Family Expo & Wellness Festival . A great festival for kids big Read more...
Icky, slimy, scaley stuff
September 11, 2008
Creepy, crawly, slimy, biting snakes, lizards, reptiles! What is the allure to our little ones? Just the other day I was remembering playing with snails and crickets as a little girl. I can recall fearlessly plucking bullfrogs from streams and scooping up tadpoles into soda bottles to eagerly deliver to my mother. She never reacted with the delight I expected, and I guess that's just it. Read more...
Party Eats
September 10, 2008
In keeping with my recent birthday party obsession, I thought I'd share with you some of my favorite food secrets for kid's birthday parties. I am an avid hot dog and pizza kind of girl for kid's parties, so you won't find a lot of fancy recipes here cause one or the other of those two will please just about everyone. I have become a big fan of Little Caesar's pizza because Read more...
Mini Detectives
September 09, 2008
There are few things my boys like better than a good mystery. They have both been obsessed with Scooby Doo since they could walk, both for the comedic value, but also for the excitement of a good mystery. If you have a kiddo who loves treasure hunts and uncovering mysteries, I have a couple of great activities for you. The first doubles as a errand so you can actually entertain the troops Read more...
Brain food and fun
September 05, 2008
Teaching your preschooler about valuable subjects such as history, environmentalism, art and music can be a daunting task. When most little ones are more interested in watching Dora, playing train or running around in circles and barking like dogs (as my children are), it can be a challenge to get them to sit still long enough to learn something of value. A great way to give them early Read more...
Get fit with baby!
August 29, 2008
Getting back in shape after a baby is born is a tough thing to do. Before my first pregnancy I was 5'4 and 135 lbs. When I gave birth to my first kiddo I was over 200 and too big for my smallish frame. After poppin' out a 10 lb. baby I was still extremely overweight and hadn't a clue how to take it off. A lot of moms naturally shed weight but I was partial to cheeseburgers and banana splits Read more...
Chalk It Up!
August 28, 2008
Art and children just seem to go together. Kids are born these amazing, imaginative, creative little beings that take to crayons and storytelling and dance and make believe like fish to water. As you may know, our little family fully embraces our creative sides but recently I've been wondering about not just enjoying the many opportunities for artistic pleasure in Sacramento, but also giving Read more...
Circus Nostalgia
August 27, 2008
When I think of the circus I remember being at Oakland Coliseum as a little girl, holding one of those swirling red and blue lights and picking cotton candy out of my hair while watching the beautiful ladies ride horseback standing straight up. I think of my father, who worked his fingers to the bone but seemed to have a bottomless wallet for one night each year. I would emerge from the magic Read more...
Little Kids, Big Screen Thrills
August 26, 2008
I have two children with two very different personalities one is brave to the point of occasional stupidity, while the other has bouts of fearfulness that defy all reason. Because of this I often find myself balancing between tempering the aggressiveness of one while attempting to coax the other out of his shell. So if you had asked me yesterday if I thought it was a good idea to take my Read more...
Renegade Lunch Lady
August 25, 2008
Now that school is back full-swing I am back to my role as active classroom mom. The volunteer hours, the field trips, the parent meetings they are enough to boggle the mind but I enjoy taking part in my kid's education. With this said, I have a bone to pick with our public school system which is San Juan Unified School District about our cafeteria food. My new first grader asked to buy his Read more...
Fun Support for Mama
August 22, 2008
While becoming a new mom is a blissful, enriching and powerful experience, it can also be very lonely. If you are not surrounded by girlfriends with their own little ones it can be difficult to figure out how to meet other moms. I found myself in this predicament when my first son was born and went the 'mom's group' route. And while I met many nice ladies, none that I had a lot in common with. Read more...
Back to School Bargains
August 21, 2008
I love a bargain. I'm a sale shopper and if someone gives me a compliment on a piece of clothing I am one of those people who says, "Thanks! Macy's clearance - five bucks!" With back-to-school shopping upon us I've been dreading the hunt for bargains when I know I have to buy my boys new shoes, rain boots, snow boots, jackets, pants, shirts, socks, sweatshirts, etc. etc. I was contemplating Read more...
Furry Feathered Fair Fun
August 20, 2008
My oldest son's first word was 'kitty', which is no surprise since we had five of them at the time. Blame it on nature or nurture, but like their old mom, my boys are avid animal enthusiasts. So in addition to keeping the usual houseful of dogs, cats, rabbits and fish, we also make regular (non-shopping) trips to the pet store so we can all get our furry fix. After writing about the great Read more...
Chess for kids!
August 15, 2008
Chess is one of those things that has seemed above and beyond what my brain could handle for the better part of my life. The people I have known that played chess were incredibly patient, generally intelligent and able to focus on one thing for a long period of time. While I believe I am fairly intelligent, patience and focus are not my strong suits so I managed to avoid the age-old game until, Read more...
Fair Fun & Free!
August 13, 2008
Ok, I'm just going to come straight out and admit this: my kids have never been to the California State Fair. I know I know we live in the state's capitol and it's an event that people drive hours to attend - but the truth is it's just too darn expensive! And that's not just because money is tight everywhere these days. The last time I went to the fair I ate six pounds of deep fried food, Read more...
Farm-fresh kids
August 08, 2008
Oddly enough, my kids love vegetables and won't touch fruit. Ok, that's not entirely true. One will eat grapes and the other will eat strawberries, but other than that they won't touch the stuff. I try to coax them by calling it 'nature's candy' which they simply don't buy. So the other day we were driving through Old Town Folsom and I noticed there was a farmer's market going on. The kids had Read more...
Free Movies!
July 30, 2008
I took my kids to summer preschool in my pj's this morning. I did, and it gets worse. They were old funky pj bottoms, orange with pink stripes and there is a tear in the butt and then there was the sweatshirt covered in cat hair and... well you get the picture. I'll just say that it wasn't pretty and that I am a bit burned out on the flexibility of summer and I'm looking for a little structure Read more...
Automobile affection
July 28, 2008
Among the ruins in our driveway there is a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie, a 1965 Ford Fairlane and a 1966 Dodge Dart. We are car guys (well, I'm a car girl) but Pops and our boys are car guys and not unlike most kids from coast to coast of this fine country that we call America. We love our automobiles, from Hot Wheels to monster trucks and we want to race them and polish them and show 'em off. Of Read more...
Take me out to the ballgame
July 25, 2008
There is nothing like a day spent at a baseball game. As a little kid, some of my fondest memories are spending afternoons with my Grandpa Jim at Oakland Coliseum eating hot dogs and watching the Oakland A's. This is not to say I was a big baseball fan, to be honest I'm still not. But there is something undeniable about the sound of the announcer, the crack of ball and bat and the kids Read more...
Wizardly delights at Fairytale Town
July 24, 2008
While I have yet to allow my boys to watch the Harry Potter movies, due to excessive marketing they are Potter fanatics like most kids. They know the characters and the movie titles and regularly beg to watch the videos. However, up to this point I have decided against exposing them to the movies not because I don't love them myself because they are a bit too scary and I am not a fan of 2 Read more...
Fireworks and fun for free!
July 02, 2008
So earlier this year I traded in my beautiful gas-guzzling SUV for a more efficient (and boring) station wagon. Honestly it was a little painful because I never wanted to be the mini-van or station wagon-driving mom, but like so many moms I caved in the name of convenience. And with the painful fact of gas prices now, thank goodness I did otherwise we would be absolutely housebound. Just Read more...
