Fishy Fun

January 15, 2009

My mother would be sad to know that one of my fondest childhood memories does not include any of my family members. Sorry mom, but when I was a kid we had these neighbors, a kind of eccentric but nice young couple named Nancy and Ray. Well one summer when I was about 8, Nancy's niece Tara came out from New Jersey for a two-week vacation. Tara was a 9 year-old gum-poppin', hair-teasin',  Read more...

One fish, two fish...

January 06, 2009

We are a home full of pets. We have dogs, cats, fish, frogs... in the past we've had rabbits, ducks, chickens - you name it. But most recently we have expanded our fish collection. We have two modest fresh water tanks and while the lovely little swimmers are a pleasure unto themselves, what I've also discovered is that they are a great teaching device for my preschooler. Here are a few ways  Read more...

Leapin' Life Lessons

October 06, 2008

If you are looking to give your preschooler a lesson about nature then have I got a great activity for you. In school my 4 and 6 year-olds are both learning about the life cycle of a frog from egg to adult. Today, I was at Sunrise Pet Center on Greenback Avenue in Citrus Heights when I noticed Fire Belly Frog tadpoles for sale. Ok, dont cringe yet moms I had one of these cute little  Read more...

Icky, slimy, scaley stuff

September 11, 2008

Creepy, crawly, slimy, biting snakes, lizards, reptiles! What is the allure to our little ones? Just the other day I was remembering playing with snails and crickets as a little girl. I can recall fearlessly plucking bullfrogs from streams and scooping up tadpoles into soda bottles to eagerly deliver to my mother. She never reacted with the delight I expected, and I guess that's just it.  Read more...

Frolicking with the Fishes

August 19, 2008

If your little one is obsessed with Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid than I have the outing for you. The Nimbus Fish Hatchery located in Gold River - right off the Hazel exit of highway 50 - is a great place to take kiddos to learn about fish and explore the natural world. The hatchery has a wide variety of salmon and trout in various stages of development in large concrete pens for viewing.  Read more...

The ocean - in Sacramento?

July 18, 2008

It's that time of year - the time when I start to itch for a day at the beach. Warm sand between your toes, children pacified by little more than a shovel and a juice box - one of Sacramento's few faults is that it is too far from the ocean. Generally Stinson Beach in Marin County is my beach of choice. But after doing some quick math I realized that it would cost me a cool $85 just in gas, not  Read more...

Lions and Tigers and Grandmas - Oh My!

June 16, 2008

My kids love nothing more than a day out with grandma and grandpa. They are well aware that the day will involve ridiculous amounts of sugar, hundreds of dollars spent on toys their mother considers crappy and annoying, not to mention a good amount of time spent joggling their little brains via amusement ride, movies, television or some other form of hedonistic junk. Now don't get me wrong, as  Read more...
