Kayaking and Pow Wows in beautiful Sacramento
May 14, 2009
Well temperatures are rising and rumor has it we are going to hit the triple digits in Sac this weekend! My boys are thrilled about the beautiful weather, we’ve spent plenty of time playing outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend I must recommend kayaking at Negro Bar in Folsom. We went last weekend and a company called Outdoor Adventures rents single and double kayaks hourly that you can paddle around the river in. It was Dad’s birthday so he had the luxury of a single kayak while I got a double that fit me and the two boys. They supply you with paddles and life jackets and the price is really reasonable at $10 an hour for a single and $20 an hour for a double. The kid’s looked for fish and snacked on chips and bottled water and it was a really wonderful way to spend the afternoon. If you are looking for a non-water activity this weekend check out Pow Wow Days in Orangevale. A community tradition for nearly fifty years, Pow Wow days offers carnival rides, vendors, live music, parade, fun food and lots of kids’ activities including games and puppet shows. Don’t miss their snow cones – the best ever! Directions to Negro Bar. From Sacramento on Highway 50, take the Folsom Rd exit at the city of Folsom. After the bridge over the river, turn left onto Greenback. The park is immediately on the left. From I80, take Greenback almost to Folsom and turn right into the park. Kayak rental are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends all summer long!Pow Wow Days runs May 14 – 17 for more info go to www.orangevalechamber.com and for a detailed schedule of events go to www.ovview.com/pow_wow_days Read more...
At one with nature
January 19, 2009
I went back to my roots this weekend and took my kids on a day trip to Tilden Park in Berkeley. Both my parents grew up a couple of miles from this amazing park, and my grandparents took me there all the time when I was a kid. Just as I remembered, it was simply wonderful. There is a 'little farm' that has cows, chickens, ducks, sheep, goats and more that kids can feed and learn about. Read more...
Autumn Activities
November 06, 2008
I have to admit I am relieved that both Halloween and the election are over. It's a mixed bag but we have some promising new leaders and today I officially dumped the leftover candy. I can only spend so many nights scrubbing Laffy Taffy out of my 4 year-olds molars. Anyway, I am looking forward to the cool November days ahead. I'm dreaming of sweet potatoes and being lulled to sleep by Read more...
Pumpkin Patch A B C's and 1 2 3's...
October 23, 2008
Going to the pumpkin patch in October is a treat that I especially look forward to. Growing up in the Bay Area, we didn't have pumpkin patches, we just bought our pumpkins from the grocery store without the fun of hay rides, corn mazes and all the other fun stuff local patches have to offer. Visiting your local pumpkin patch can also be an educational experience for your little ones. Here Read more...

Mini Detectives

There are few things my boys like better than a good mystery. They have both been obsessed with Scooby Doo since they could walk, both for the comedic value, but also for the excitement of a good mystery. If you have a kiddo who loves treasure hunts and uncovering mysteries, I have a couple of great activities for you. The first doubles as a errand so you can actually entertain the troops Read more...
Furry Feathered Fair Fun
August 20, 2008
My oldest son's first word was 'kitty', which is no surprise since we had five of them at the time. Blame it on nature or nurture, but like their old mom, my boys are avid animal enthusiasts. So in addition to keeping the usual houseful of dogs, cats, rabbits and fish, we also make regular (non-shopping) trips to the pet store so we can all get our furry fix. After writing about the great Read more...
Berry goodness
August 01, 2008
Monday we are off to our annual berry picking excusion in Auburn and I am SO excited. Ok, call me a dork but I'm a hippy at heart and the idea of picking my own fresh berries with my boys and going home to make a cobbler is nothing short of utter delight to me. I just overlook the fact that my boys will tell you they don't actually like blackberries and that the weather will be Read more...
Get Away without getting too far away
July 14, 2008
So our focus at Savvy Source this month is getting away and with current gas prices that's a tough thing to do unless you have a giant savings account your willing to tap into. My boys and I have spent a lot of time exploring the Greater Sacramento area this month, but most days we come home to hit the hay. However, it is never a real getaway unless you get a fun overnight somewhere away from Read more...
