Pumpkin Patch kinda weekend...

October 16, 2009

If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend with the kiddos, it's the perfect time to hit a local pumpkin patch and have some fun.  You'll miss the crazy rush that happens later in the month and it's a great way to kick off this holiday season, which is usually a favorite with the little ones.  I found a great list of local pumpkin patches which include hay rides, train rides, corn mazes, haunted houses, jump houses and more.  So check out one of these.   I highly recommend the Pumpkin Farm in Citrus Heights and Fog Willow Pumpkin Farm in Wilton.  My boys and I have gone to the Pumpkin Farm every year since they were toddlers and Fog Willow for many field trips.  They are both really wonderful, so check one out and enjoy this amazing season!

Fog Willow Pumpkin Farm is the brainchild of Elk Grove school teacher Stacey Cates. With her family history rooted in farming, Cates felt that students weren’t learning much about agriculture and wanted to do something about it. Hence, Fog Willow was born in 2003. The farm is tucked along the banks of the Consumnes River and is immensely popular with school-aged kids as evidenced by the many school busses making their way to the farm. This is a great location to bring your family as there are lots to do, with a barrel train, hay rides, petting zoo, crafts, picnic area, haystack and barbecue during the weekends. Kids can join the Lil’ Pickers Punkin’ Club ($20) to receive goodies.

Baking crazy!

October 13, 2009

Fall brings out the baker in me.  Both my grandmothers were wonderful bakers and I was lucky enough to have spent time with them in the kitchen creating holiday delicacies that still bring back wonderful, cozy memories.  Coincidentally my mom has come to visit for a few days and one of the traditions she has with my boys is to bake cookies together.  They were over the moon when they discovered she was coming and checked the pantry five times to make sure we had all the right ingredients.  (Which by the way involves sugar, flour and chocolate chips only in their minds).  I also had a fortunate discovery at my monthly Kindergarten parent meeting last night when a fellow parent and friend named Jennifer brought in a heaping plate of the most delicious pumpkin chocolate chip cookies you can imagine.  I know it sounds like an odd combination but so many parents asked for the recipe she was generous enough to email it to the whole class today.  She makes these with her kiddos - I plan to give the recipe to grandma tomorrow - maybe you can enjoy them too!
Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies
2 sticks margarine                                                                             4 tsp. baking powder
3 cups sugar                                                                                        1 tsp. salt
4 eggs                                                                                                   2 tsp. ginger
2 tsp. vanilla                                                                                        2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. lemon extract(or lemon juice works)                                1 large (29 oz.) can of pumpkin
6 cups flour                                                                                          2 cups chocolate chips
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
Mix ingredients as listed except alternate two cups flour with 1/3 of the pumpkin, etc., to avoid lumps.  Drop on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.
Makes 6-8 dozen

Spontaneous parenting

October 06, 2009

The other day a friend asked me an interesting question during a discussion about spending quality time with your kids.  She said, ‘What do you remember from your childhood?’.  I took a few minutes to answer because we had been deep in discussion about soccer practice, homework and lack of sleep.  When I thought about my sweetest memories of time with my parents when I was a child it was when we stepped outside the ordinary.  Like when my mom let me skip school to see The Empire Strikes Back opening day.  Or when my father took me to Fairyland (Oakland’s answer to Fairytale Town) after taking me to the grocery store and letting me pick anything and everything from the Hostess rack.  I can still feel that day.  Sitting on a picnic bench at about five years old, listening to the warbled mother goose songs and eating all the Ho-ho’s, Ding-dongs, and Twinkies I’d ever dreamt of.  This changed the direction of our conversation and inspired me to find creative ways to make memories with my children.

So last week I took my first babystep.  Picking up my 2nd grader from school I asked him how he would feel about skipping soccer practice that day to do something fun.  He and the kindergartener were both game so we headed out to IKEA so they could select a new table and chairs for coloring and having snacks on.  We then went to the cafeteria where they stuffed themselves with meatballs and mac and cheese (mom didn’t even mention vegetables) and afterward they each selected on small toy and dessert.  My younger son chose a huge soft serve cone and my older a cinnamon bun slathered in frosting.  Needless to say they were happy as pigs in you-know-what and on the way home when I asked them what their favorite part of the afternoon was my older son looked thoughtful and said, “Um, mom – I think the best thing about today is that we got to be together”.  Need I say more?

Halloween is a-comin!

September 08, 2009

So I hate to be the one to break the bad news, but the holiday season is indeed upon us.  It’s only early September but next month brings with it the excitement of Halloween and we all know that after that it is a landslide of holidays.  So every time this year I try to really prepare.  Decide which events I’ll take the kids to and what traditions we will squeeze into our schedule.  I begin with ordering or making (depending on what they want) Halloween costumes and for the past five years I always make time for the Fairytale Town Halloween festival.  It changes every year and this year it has a sixties psychedelic theme.  But the best part about this event is that it falls a week before the actual holiday.  So when our little ones are counting the days and just itching to put on some costumes and collect some candy, they have a little pre-season fun to tide them over until the 31st.  Here are the details, be sure to put it on your calendar because this is a really fun one.Roll up for a Safe & Super Halloween! Tickets are now on sale for the 23rd annual SAFE & SUPER HALLOWEEN celebration at Fairytale Town.  This year's theme is the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. Journey back in time to the psychedelic sixties for three consecutive nights of family friendly Trick-or-Treating dedicated to the music and memories of those fabulous four Liverpool lads. You'll visit 17 candy stations scattered along the long and winding road throughout the park. Check out the Octopus' Garden, take a trip down Penny Lane, cross Abbey Road and stop off at Strawberry Fields before you get back to where you once belonged. You can make your very own Walrus Puppet and Spin Art, enter a far out costume parade, have your picture taken on stage with Sgt. Pepper and the Yellow Submarine, get a ticket from Lovely Rita the Meter Maid, and experience plenty of surreal surprises for young and old alike as you sing along--all together now--with all the songs you know and love. The MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR at Fairytale Town is a special ticketed event: Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 23, 24, 25, 2009, from 5PM - 9PM. Presale tickets are $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Day-of the event tickets are $9 for members and $12 for nonmembers. For more information please go to our website: www.fairytaletown.org.  Puppet Art Theater will also be performing puppet shows in our Children's Theater during the MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR event. Puppet show tickets are $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers (children 2 and under will be admitted to the puppet show free), in addition to event admission. Puppet showtimes are 6 PM, 7 PM & 8 PM.

Encourage your little ones love of reading!

August 31, 2009

On Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27 Fairytale Town will host their annual Children's Book Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The best part of this event is that it includes free admission and celebrates books and reading.

The two-day Festival is the largest early childhood literacy event in the region. The event features author and illustrator presentations, storytelling performances, celebrity readers, a book swap, and hands-on literacy activities offered by an array of community-based literacy organizations.  Another great part of this event is that children can bring in gently used books and trade them at the Festival Book Swap.

"Creating an interest in books during a child's early years not only ignites a lifelong love of reading, it also makes children better prepared for school," said State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, Chair of the ScholarShare Investment Board. "Improved literacy equals a stronger future for our state. I'm pleased to be part of this event."

This year's author and illustrator presenters include Francisco Alarcon, author of Laughing Tomatoes and Other Stories; Kenneth Spengler and Margaret Spengler, illustrators of many books including Little Red Hen Gets Help and The Happiest Hippo in the World, and Danna Smith author of Two at the Zoo, as well as authors Annie Bowler, Shirley Parenteau, Carolyn Newcomer, and illustrators Barbara Lyon and Johnny Swager. All author and illustrator presentations take place on the Mother Goose Stage.  Fairytale Town favorites Francie Dillon (Saturday) and Sandy Lynne Holman (Sunday) will both perform.

Hangman and alphabet fun!

July 06, 2009

The days of summer suddenly seem to be numbered.  It’s July already and school starts next month!  So we are doing our best to enjoy the summertime and and get a little pre-kindergarten learning in as well.  One of my first grader’s favorite game is Hangman.  While my 5 year-old can’t yet fully participate in figuring out the words, he has grasped enough of the alphabet to guess at the letters that might solve each puzzle.  In order to help facilitate this family game, I found a great toy made by my favorite puzzle makers, Melissa and Doug and it’s at Learning Express toy store and called simply, Hangman.

Perfect for home or in the car, this board game is crafted of quality wood and brings new fun and convenience to the game with innovative flipping pieces that won’t get lost.  It has a cute little illustration of the man and letters to make any possible word combination and costs a mere $14.99.  You can find the game at www.learningexpress.com or at one of their Sacramento locations in Rancho Cordova or Roseville.  So if you have a grade-schooler or a preschooler, pick up this game today to work on your ABC’s or reading skills as well!

Dog Gone Fun

June 07, 2009

If your family is anything like ours, it is full of furry and feathered friends that help make life a little more complete.  In addition to our fish and kitties, we have two dogs named Bo and Bella who my boys adore.  Dogs are a great way to teach kids about compassion, respect and responsibility.

While admittedly I pick up most of the poop and pay for the vet appointments, my boys help feed, train and generally care for both of our pooches.  The dog park is a great way to reward your furry friend with some much needed social time and it can be a fun opportunity to spend time with your kids, teach them about different dog breeds and spend a little time outdoors to boot.  Luckily the Sacramento area is full of many different dog parks for pooches of all sizes, maybe this week is the one that your family spends a little time outdoors with man’s best friend in tow.

If you go to www.dogparkusa.com there is a comprehensive list of all the local dog parks in our area.  Don’t forget to wear playclothes, bring water bottles and hand sanitizer – it’s hot out and those pups can be dirty!

All Kids Wanna Hit Sometimes!

May 25, 2009

After having two boys I realize that all boys and most kids at one time or another experiment with hitting.  Oftentimes it happens in toddlerhood when kid are experimenting with cause and effect (if I smack Mama she makes a great loud sound!), but it is not uncommon for kids, especially boys to be interested in wrestling, roughhousing and boxing as they get older, it seems it’s just their nature!  Anyway, I have managed to keep my boys from acting out in anger for the most part, but I also recognize that they have a lot of natural energy and aggression that needs to be released in a healthy way.  I’ve found a couple of great toys that my boys adore and have proven to be boy-life savers again and again.

The first is a toy I didn’t even know they made anymore: Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots Game.  Honestly I had never even seen this toy until my kids came across it at Longs Drugs and began to obsess about it until Grandma gave in and bought it for them.  It is a very basic toy originally created in 1966 that consists of a plastic ring with two plastic robots.  You push both their heads down so that they click into place then you use very simple controls to make the robots ‘box’ until one of their heads pop up.  Doesn’t seem like anything thrilling to me, but my kids absolutely love it and I figure if their robots box, they are less likely to box each other.  You can find this game for about $20 on Amazon.com, at Toys R Us, Walmart, Longs, etc.

And on the subject of boxing the other great toy I discovered is a kid-sized Punching Bag and Glove Set by Schylling.  A friend suggested getting my 7 year-old a set when he was having trouble expressing his frustration.  I’m so happy that I took her advice because both my kids love to go outside and knock this light-weight little bag around.  I’ve definitely seen a difference in their ability to talk about things when they are agitated or frustrated instead of yelling or throwing something!  You can find this set also on Amazon.com for about $20!

Kayaking and Pow Wows in beautiful Sacramento

May 14, 2009

Well temperatures are rising and rumor has it we are going to hit the triple digits in Sac this weekend!  My boys are thrilled about the beautiful weather, we’ve spent plenty of time playing outdoors and enjoying the sunshine.  If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend I must recommend kayaking at Negro Bar in Folsom.  We went last weekend and a company called Outdoor Adventures rents single and double kayaks hourly that you can paddle around the river in.  It was Dad’s birthday so he had the luxury of a single kayak while I got a double that fit me and the two boys.  They supply you with paddles and life jackets and the price is really reasonable at $10 an hour for a single and $20 an hour for a double.  The kid’s looked for fish and snacked on chips and bottled water and it was a really wonderful way to spend the afternoon.  If you are looking for a non-water activity this weekend check out Pow Wow Days in Orangevale.  A community tradition for nearly fifty years, Pow Wow days offers carnival rides, vendors, live music, parade, fun food and lots of kids’ activities including games and puppet shows.  Don’t miss their snow cones – the best ever!  Directions to Negro Bar. From Sacramento on Highway 50, take the Folsom Rd exit at the city of Folsom. After the bridge over the river, turn left onto Greenback. The park is immediately on the left. From I80, take Greenback almost to Folsom and turn right into the park.  Kayak rental are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends all summer long!Pow Wow Days runs May 14 – 17 for more info go to  www.orangevalechamber.com  and for a detailed schedule of events go to www.ovview.com/pow_wow_days  Read more...

So it's that time again, time to honor all those hardworking, loving, amazing mothers.  I know, you are used to prioritizing everything and everyone above yourself - but it's important to give yourself a pat on the back and also to teach the kids that mom is more than a cook and a maid - she's a real person who needs to be appreciated!  So schedule a pedicure, have coffee with a friend and then hang out with your kids this weekend and remind them that their mom rocks!  Crusing around on the internet I found a bunch of great family activities for Mother's Day on one of my favorite local events calendars - www.parentsmonthlyonline.com.   Happy Mother's Day!

While you wander the grounds learning all about agriculture, you can listen to live bluegrass music provided by Loose Acoustic Trio. 11 am – 3 pm. All ages. General $4.50; Children 2 & under Free. Birds n the bees

April 28, 2009

Ive been searching for a book that will help me teach my kids about the facts of life, once the big question is posed.  Im talkin about the birds and the bees here, how babies are made, the big sex talk.  The funny thing is my boys have yet to ask me because they have the whole thing figured out for themselves.  They know when women are pregnant that they are growing babies inside them.   And the one time the topic came up my six year-old said, Oh, I know how mamas get babies mom, rolling his eyes and sighing like I was a complete idiot.  Dads just give them a little piece of themselves and the moms use it to make the baby - easy.  Well, I couldnt disagree.  However, this milestone is something Ive worried about.  Kids are learning about sex younger and younger these days and I didnt want my preschooler or my first grader to hear something at school before it came from me.  So Im working up the courage, but in the meantime Ive found an amazing book to help with the process.  Its called So Thats How I Was Born! By Dr. Robert Brooks and is illustrated by Susan Perl.  Originally published in 1984, this book takes a lovely straightforward approach to teaching kids about the facts of life without anything shocking or graphic involved.  It tells the story of a mother, father and son who have a discussion about making babies.  It is full of really lovely illustrations which show how boys and girls bodies develop and also how babies develop in their mother’s wombs.  Any moms out there who are interested in a great book to help teach kids about sex, or might need one in the future should check this book out.  Sadly, it seems to be out of print, but can be found on www.amazon.com used from $.97 and new starting at about $35.    Read more...

Fun for Parents and Kids Alike

February 04, 2009

Listening to the radio last night I heard a commercial for what seems to be a new local family venue called Kids Quest.  Located at Red Hawk Casino in Placerville, Kids Quest is an hourly child care service.  Kids Quest is supervised by licensed professionals trained in first aid and CPR techniques for children 6 weeks to 12 years old.

No Bones About It!

January 28, 2009

While often it is just boys that like bones, I've found that most kids are interested in (or obsessed with) dinosaurs and dinosaur skeletons. Either way, teaching kids about bones is a great way to enter into conversations about health, how our bodies work and how healthy eating can make them bigger, faster and stronger (like mini super heroes!). A great exhibit is going on right now at  Read more...

Looking forward to fairies in March...

January 27, 2009

Well it looks like March is going to be a great month for events at Fairytale Town. In order to fit in all the activities and events I want to take my kids to, I've taken to scheduling on my calendar months in advance. Hence the reason I am sharing these fun activities over a month early! The Fairytale Town season kicks off with an event called 'Read Across Fairytale Town' on March 2, an  Read more...

At one with nature

January 19, 2009

I went back to my roots this weekend and took my kids on a day trip to Tilden Park in Berkeley. Both my parents grew up a couple of miles from this amazing park, and my grandparents took me there all the time when I was a kid. Just as I remembered, it was simply wonderful. There is a 'little farm' that has cows, chickens, ducks, sheep, goats and more that kids can feed and learn about.  Read more...

A Fairytale Town Education

January 16, 2009

It's no secret that I love Fairytale Town. I grew up with a similar venue, Fairyland, in Oakland and have wonderful memories of going there with my father when I was a little girl. However, Fairytale Town is head and shoulders above what I experienced as a child. They have amazing events that focus on really educating children and opening them up to new experiences. I was really impressed and  Read more...

Fishy Fun

January 15, 2009

My mother would be sad to know that one of my fondest childhood memories does not include any of my family members. Sorry mom, but when I was a kid we had these neighbors, a kind of eccentric but nice young couple named Nancy and Ray. Well one summer when I was about 8, Nancy's niece Tara came out from New Jersey for a two-week vacation. Tara was a 9 year-old gum-poppin', hair-teasin',  Read more...

Play a little

January 14, 2009

I must admit that I never made the time to go to the theater until after I had kids. Once my toddler lost interest in simple toys, I began to search for ways to entertain him in a more sophisticated way, and I have to admit I was a bit lost. One day a mother at a park near our home suggested I take him to a performance at Chautauqua Playhouse in Carmichael. I nodded politely and secretly  Read more...

Mark your calendar!

January 13, 2009

Museums are a great way to get out in the world with your kiddos, big and small, get some walking in, see some sights and learn a little about the world too! So mark your calendars because Saturday, February 7th is the 11th annual Sacramento Museum day when twenty-six greater Sacramento area museums offer FREE (yes totally FREE) admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They also offer free shuttle  Read more...

Cool Mags and Health Foods

January 12, 2009

As much as I'm an out and about mom in Sacramento, sometimes I realize just how out of the loop I am! For instance, yesterday I revisited www.kidaroundmag.com - my very favorite local publication for moms. They have all kinds of great stuff on there web site - contests, articles, a calendar - you can even read the entire magazine on-line! Anyway, I was cruising their calendar and found a bunch  Read more...

Rubik's Fun

January 10, 2009

Last year, purely out of nostalgia, I bought a Rubik's cube. Like many of us I was a kid in the eighties and witnessed in full force the Rubik's cube craze that ensued. Of course, my boys had never seen one. My 6 year-old likes to play with it in the car and while he can't figure it out, he thinks I'm a genius because I can get one color solid on one-side (that means the other five sides are  Read more...

The Science and Art of Raising Kind Kids

January 07, 2009

Surfing the net today (do they still say that or am I dating myself?), anyway, I was surfing and I came across a great opportunity for parents if you are up for a day trip this weekend. www.parentsmonthlyonline.com has a great monthly calendar of activities for kids. This month they had a blurb on the San Francisco Exploratorium which is offering a one-time class called ' The Science and Art  Read more...

One fish, two fish...

January 06, 2009

We are a home full of pets. We have dogs, cats, fish, frogs... in the past we've had rabbits, ducks, chickens - you name it. But most recently we have expanded our fish collection. We have two modest fresh water tanks and while the lovely little swimmers are a pleasure unto themselves, what I've also discovered is that they are a great teaching device for my preschooler. Here are a few ways  Read more...

Looney Tunes Art?

December 29, 2008

If you laughed at the antics of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny on a daily basis like I did as a kid than I have got a great thing for you to do with your kiddos this week. The exhibit it billed as a comprehensive overview of the legendary Hollywood animation studio and  Read more...

Christmas diversions

December 25, 2008

All the presents are open, we've stuffed ourselves with danish and fresh fruit all morning, and now mom and dad are in a Christmas gluttony-induced coma. However, the kids are raring to go. They have every battery-operated toy known to man running at the same time and are bouncing off the walls due to Santa excitement and too much sugar. So today, we are headed to the movies. Sounded like a fun  Read more...

Learning from our mistakes

December 24, 2008

There are so many things that you can learn about being a parent before you have children of your own. Prior to the births of my kiddos I had several friends who had their own kids. Spending time with them I watched their trials and errors and took notes. While every parent is going to make a plethora of mistakes, it is still a wise thing to learn from others, the good and the bad. One  Read more...

Murphy's Law

December 23, 2008

I keep thinking about that Murphy's Law thing. What is it? Anything that can go wrong, will. Well with just two days of mayhem before Christmas arrives, Murphy's law has ruled my world. My computer crashed, my sewing machine broke just as I was finishing a quilt that was a gift, my dog wandered in with a giant mystery wound that needs stitches and my kids are as badly behaved as I can imagine.  Read more...

Evan's Kitchen

December 16, 2008

Tonight I chatted with an adorable young woman named Stephanie whos father owns one of my favorite local family-friendly dining establishments, Evan's Kitchen. Formerly known as The Family Room, I visited this fine establishment a couple of years ago with my kiddos and had a wonderful experience. It fell off my radar because it is located in Sacramento, nearly thirty minutes from  Read more...

Fun on Ice

December 11, 2008

Even though we live in California, there are few things that make it feel more like the holidays than ice skating. This is why I was thrilled to find out today that Sacramento has two seasonal ice rinks to enjoy! In addition to the Westfield Downtown Plaza Ice Rink, Folsom now boasts the Historic Sutter Street Ice Rink I have yet to check it out, but it will definitely be on our list of things  Read more...

Easy, fab kid-friendly gifts!

December 09, 2008

In keeping with my goal to create wonderful and economical gifts this year, I wanted to share a goodie recipe that makes an amazing gift. Instead of going to the hassle of buying all those ingredients, I buy a $1.50 bag of sugar cookie mix. Then I take the cookie out of the mix bag  Read more...

Children & Charity

December 04, 2008

Let's face it, most of our kids are spoiled. Most of them have enough toys for ten kids to play with and all they want is more, more, more. I try to remind my children regularly throughout the year how fortunate they are and squash any bratty entitled behavior. Of course at this time of year it's especially important to remind little ones that charity is the greatest gift, and I just found  Read more...

Dollar Store Delights

December 03, 2008

So the only thing my kids think is more exciting than Santa, is buying gifts for their friends and family this year. Unfortunately, my checkbook cannot accomodate gifts from our family AND each of them for everyone, so we are going to do our official 2nd annual Dollar Store Holiday Extravaganza. Ok, I know everything there is crappy, plastic and unlikely to last more than a week - but I can't  Read more...

The magic of reading...

December 02, 2008

Today we had our official first, 1st grade parent-teacher-student conference. It was a little different from what I remember as a kid because my 6 year-old led the first part of the meeting by escorting his dad and I around the room and showing us what he has learned so far this year. The second part of the meeting was typical, the teachers (he has two) went over his test scores and progress so  Read more...

Christmas is coming!

December 01, 2008

Ok people, don't freak out - but you have 23 days until Santa shows up and that guy better not blow it this year. I have defintely failed my plan to have all my shopping done by December 1st :). However, I am not being too hard on myself. I am making my list, checking it twice, and trying to figure out how to give great gifts without going into massive credit debit (again!). So this year I  Read more...

Little lessons from a playdate hosting mom

November 25, 2008

Today we had the mother of all play dates. Five boys - that's right - two four year-olds and three six-year olds. It was surprisingly easy, but there were two very good lessons I learned during the six hours (count 'em, six) that I hosted the play date. The first lesson is this: Legos are a godsend. And Legos from garage sales are priceless. Now most kids enjoy Legos, however they are  Read more...

November 24, 2008

There are moments when our schedule gets so hectic and I'm so frantic to not be late to the next activity that I completely lose all perspective. In a way I think we have all lost perspective these days. We are raised in a country that teaches us that there is a certain way to raise children. We begin by stimulating them with every possible piece of information as little babies, next we  Read more...

Big Screen Holiday Fun

November 20, 2008

I love holiday movies - I mean it, I LOVE them. I've seen Miracle on 34th Street about one million times and I'll rent it again this year. One of our family favorites is The Polar Express. Ok, the animation is a little weird and all, but it's a great story and a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit. I was delighted to discover that they have altered the film for the gigantic, amazing IMAX  Read more...

Storytime Relief

November 18, 2008

Turkey Day Craftiness

November 17, 2008

In keeping with our quest to have a festive and kid-friendly Thanksgiving, today the kids and I created an adorable Thanksgiving centerpiece for our holiday table. Turkey Day books to enjoy

November 14, 2008

So yesterday we made an early Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. It was a huge fabulous mess and the kids and I celebrated with warm pumpkin pie and vanilla ice cream for dinner. Pumpkin Pie with your pumpkins

November 13, 2008

To continue with my quest to involve my kids in Thanksgiving festivities (also known as pawning off cooking labor on innocent under-age workers) I have a second great recipe to make with your kids to share today. Ok, it's really original and mysterious - that's a lie - I'll just come clean and admit, it's pumpkin pie. But wait! It's not as silly as it sounds. I have a  Read more...

Battery-free, screen-free, beep-free play!

November 10, 2008

One of the big challenges of parenting today is to find ways to keep our children occupied without letting them rot in front of the television or Nintendo all day long. Video games are one of those things that seem to permeate every child's life these days. And while many of the games are kid-friendly, it can be difficult to tell what games are appropriate for your child. There is also the  Read more...

Fall Plays!

November 07, 2008

As many of you may have already figured out, I am a big fan of theater for children. Going to plays with children inspires their imaginations, encourages their love of books, gives them new ideas for play and often inspires brand new little thespians. While many parents don't think taking their little ones to performances is a wise idea, I always encourage it. Our local theaters that offer  Read more...

Autumn Activities

November 06, 2008

I have to admit I am relieved that both Halloween and the election are over. It's a mixed bag but we have some promising new leaders and today I officially dumped the leftover candy. I can only spend so many nights scrubbing Laffy Taffy out of my 4 year-olds molars. Anyway, I am looking forward to the cool November days ahead. I'm dreaming of sweet potatoes and being lulled to sleep by  Read more...

Coming Soon to Theaters Near You!

November 05, 2008

Few things thrill me like a trip to the movies. It has been about five years since I've seen anything rated beyond PG - however hot popcorn and chocolate coupled with a dark theater and my kiddos next to me make the experience as exciting as any Oscar-winner. One of the things I love to do is look online and anticipate the new movies coming out. Call me a nerd, but I put them on my calendar  Read more...

Election Day with Kids in Tow

November 03, 2008

Tomorrow is it. That's right, possibly the most important election of our lifetime and here we are, right in the thick of it. Along with us are the little ones in our backseats, watching the protesters lining the usually quiet sidewalks, listening to the debates on the radio and television. How much do we enlighten our kiddos? When my 4 year-old asks what a 'proposition' is,  Read more...

Halloween Learning Fun

October 29, 2008

Although Halloween seems to be a holiday full of indulgences: candy and costumes and craziness, like everything in life it is also a great opportunity to teach your kids something valuable. Sit down with your little one to sift through the tootsie rolls and candy bars and help them  Read more...

Halloween Treats & Eats

October 27, 2008

If I haven't mentioned it yet, I love Halloween. It gives me a reason to bid a happy goodbye to the sweetness of summertime and an excuse to dress up in ridiculous costumes with my children. We have many traditions around this holiday, but one of my boys' favorite is Halloween cooking. We make everything from mummy hotdogs to popcorn balls. The three of us have so much fun measuring and  Read more...

Spooky Fun - one week early!

October 24, 2008

In my opinion, Halloween comes and goes too quickly. A month's worth of build-up and excitement which culminates in a single night is not enough to satisfy those of us with a passion for candy and dress-up clothes! So take the time this weekend to really celebrate this spooky month. There are a whole list of great activities for kids so they can put on their outfits and have a ball.  Read more...

Pumpkin Patch A B C's and 1 2 3's...

October 23, 2008

Visiting your local pumpkin patch can also be an educational experience for your little ones. Here  Read more...

Hard Times for Kids too

October 07, 2008

It seems that most people these days are strapped financially. It can be difficult to help your preschooler adjust when he or she is used to new goodies and expensive outings on a regular basis. I know some people tred more lightly on these subjects but I tend to be frank with my kids, i.e. "No. Mom is broke." End of discussion. I wonder if I am permanently damaging them when they say  Read more...

Shy Kiddos

September 22, 2008

It seems these days we are lectured by the general public about how we parent and above that, judged for our children's behavior. While we do nurture our children, and should be expected to regulate their appropriate behavior, I think the lines are blurred when a child is particularly shy. While shyness and social anxiety can come from over-protective parents, there are also children who are  Read more...

Puppies and Preschoolers - advice from the pros

Since yesterday I morbidly decided to delve into death and house pets, I thought today I would invite local publisher Johnita Wemken, owner of the Pet Gazette (www.petgazette.org) publication, to talk about puppies and preschoolers. While dogs do help teach kids about responsibility and empathy, the relationship does have to develop and be nurtured. You can't throw any old puppy at any old  Read more...

Rules, regulations and rowdy little ones

When I think of the circus I remember being at Oakland Coliseum as a little girl, holding one of those swirling red and blue lights and picking cotton candy out of my hair while watching the beautiful ladies ride horseback standing straight up.
